Dear Readers,

Welcome! I am Professor BongJoo Lee, the project director of the Demographic Transition and Strategies for Future Society at Seoul National University, South Korea. Through our successfully established Korean Population Center, we conduct interdisciplinary research projects on population dynamics and share research findings around the world.

We are a part of the 10-10 Project, which is an academic project where the Department of Social Welfare and the Department of Sociology of Seoul National University work on population fluctuations and social policies. The major focuses of the project include archiving data (especially survey data and country-level indicators for populations in Asia), holding international symposiums, and offering academic exchange programs. Ultimately, we hope to develop our team as an Asian hub to disseminate innovative studies to a global audience and to provide such guidelines on social policy as those on dynamic changes in population.

We are very much delighted and proud to share the work so far and our upcoming plans.

2021 Conferences

Annual International Symposium on 《Population Dynamics and Social Policy》

Two Sessions: 9:00~10:10 & 16:00~17:30, October 7th, 2021

This international symposium was on the current issues of low birth rate and aging population and the corresponding social policies. Leading experts from Asia, Europe, and the Americas graced us with their presence. This symposium was a great chance for Seoul National University to be recognized as a leading research institution that reacts promptly to international population changes. We feel honored we shared and learned the experiences of Japan and European countries who had gone through the challenges of low birth rates and aging populations. We hope to provide implications especially for Asian countries that may expect rapid population fluctuation in the future.

Distinguished Lecture Series on 《Population Dynamics and Social Policy 》

Time and Date: 10:00~11:00 a.m., December 17-21, 2021

Two special lectures were given by Prof. James Raymo (from Princeton University) and Prof. Deborah Carr (from Boston University), both of whom are renowned experts on social policy and demography. They discussed low birth rates in Japan and the effects of physical disability on personal life (especially on employment). We expect these lectures had implications for social policies on future population fluctuation and well-being. We also expect they helped students and researchers at Seoul National University build international networks and experience international research environments.
